Questions 4 :
Q4 – 20 MARKS – 25 MINUTES
Focusing on (a) upset, (b) angry, and (c) sympathy ensures that you fully address the question while keeping your response structured and evaluative.
Introduction (2-3 sentences)
I agree that the mother is presented as both upset and angry at her son’s death, and the writer creates sympathy for her in the ending. Her silent grief and deep sorrow make the reader pity her, while her determination for vengeance reveals her anger and sense of justice. The writer uses description, dialogue, and symbolism to present these emotions in a way that shapes the reader’s response.
(a) The Mother’s Upset (One Paragraph)
The mother’s grief is shown through her stillness and silence, which emphasizes the depth of her pain. Instead of crying loudly, she remains motionless, simply watching him with a blank stare. This makes her sorrow feel overwhelming yet internalized, which is a powerful way to evoke sympathy. The phrase “stretching her wrinkled hand over the body” conveys both tenderness and helplessness, reinforcing the idea that she is completely consumed by loss. The fact that she remains alone with her dog, who howls in distress, further isolates her in her grief, making her pain even more profound.
(b) The Mother’s Anger (One Paragraph)
However, her anger is just as powerful as her grief. This is clear in the vengeful promise she makes: “Never fear, my boy… you shall be avenged.” The direct address to her dead son makes this moment deeply emotional, but also chilling. Her repetition of “sleep” suggests a final goodbye, but also foreshadows the vengeance she will seek. The dog’s continuous howling mirrors her inner rage, symbolizing that her pain is not just passive sorrow, but a force driving her towards action.
(c) Sympathy for the Mother (One Paragraph)
The writer creates sympathy for the mother by showing how completely she is changed by grief. The contrast between her cold, motionless body language and her fierce, whispered promise of revenge makes her emotions feel raw and realistic. The loneliness of the setting, with no family left to carry out the vendetta, increases the reader’s pity for her isolation. Even her dog’s reaction, howling “monotonously,” emphasizes how deeply her loss affects everything around her. The reader does not just see her as a grieving mother but as a woman whose whole existence has been shattered, making it impossible not to sympathize with her.
