Simile

Metaphor

Personification
Giving human traits to non-human things.
Example: "The wind whispered through the trees."
Onomatopoeia
Words that imitate sounds.
Example: "The leaves crunched underfoot."
Alliteration
The repetition of initial consonant sounds.
Example: "Sally sells seashells by the seashore."
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for effect.
Example: "I’ve told you a million times!"
Idioms
Phrases that don’t mean exactly what they say.
Example: "It’s raining cats and dogs."
Imagery
Descriptive language that appeals to the senses.
Example: "The warm, golden crust of the pie filled the air with a sweet aroma."
Oxymoron
Two opposite ideas placed together for effect.
Example: "Bittersweet."
Symbolism
Using objects, colors, or actions to represent deeper meanings.
Example: "A red rose often symbolizes love."
